Day 5 - More Events

First, some observations as of Day 5:

• there are many deer located in this area of France as we saw deer on three separate occasions
• many sunflower fields and corn fields
• so many gigantic farms in Burgundy area
• in the small villages the residents are so friendly (everyone says Bonjour and Au Revoir/Bon Soir)
• on the small country roads in Champagne and Burgundy you can drive for up to 10 minutes and never see another car! Yeh!
• restaurants open at 7 pm
• Lana loves Badoit water
• French meals typically do not focus on vegetables
• we commonly mis-pronounce many French words, but as each day passes our accents improve dramatically and our pronunciation (we think)
• ringing Church bells in Essoyes
• the quiet in Essoyes
• drivers are pretty low key - nobody honking horns or giving each other the finger
• gas is trés expensive
• when you gas up, you do not have to pay in advance; you pump the gas and then go inside and pay (just like the old days in Canada)
• warm French salads - yummy and comforting
• while overall French service in restaurants is confounding, occasionally, you get a fantastic surprise with great service

The only other addition to Day 5 was our lunch in Meursault (Côte de Beaune). We found a restaurant located on the way to Domaine Vincent Latour. La Goutte d'Or was a real find. Wow, the food was great and as you can see the Menu du Jour was 13Euro each for three courses.

I had a very tasty Rosé which in this part of the world is always Pinot Noir grapes.

Taboulé is like couscous with tomatoes, peppers and cucumbers. Light and refreshing.

My Rillette was chicken and beef. Very good and the bread was like a rustic country style bread. Crusty and chewy!

My marinated Chicken (honey & ketchup) came with what Lana described as "French tater tots". Whatever they do with these potatoes we need to find out as they were delicious!

Pork roast with mustard sauce and rice. Yummy!

Dessert comprised of chocolate mousse square (?) and creme caramel. Both desserts were vacuumed up quickly.

A divine lunch eaten outside in a casual roadside restaurant in the heart of Burgundy. They didn't speak English, but it all worked out. What surprises you can find. Even more importantly, the server was prompt, friendly and attentive. Plus, we got our bill quickly and paid quickly.   :-)
